Nostalyia Backup for Google Photos

Nostalyia Backup is a free browser extension for Chrome and Firefox. It works right inside the Google Photos website and copies the memories you choose straight into your private Nostalyia gallery, at full quality. Once your photos are safely backed up, you can delete them from Google Photos and keep your Google storage small.Your photos travel from Google directly to your own gallery. We never see them, store them, or use them for anything.

What it does

  • Back up the way you want. Save a single open photo, a whole day or month from your timeline, or an entire album, all with a single click.
  • Originals, not copies. Photos, videos, and live photos are saved at their original quality, with the motion half of a live photo kept alongside the still.
  • Dates and places stay put. Each item keeps the day it was taken and the location it was taken at, so your gallery timeline looks exactly like Google Photos, even for files that carry no date of their own.
  • It never deletes anything. The extension only ever backs up. Removing photos from Google Photos to reclaim storage stays your decision, done by you, after you have confirmed the backup.
  • No re-uploads. Anything already in your gallery is skipped automatically, so you can stop and resume a large backup whenever you like.

Getting started

Add Nostalyia Backup to Chrome or Firefox.

Sign in to your Nostalyia dashboard in the same browser.

Open the extension options and click Connect with Nostalyia. It links the extension to your gallery for you, no settings to copy by hand.

Open Google Photos. You will see a Nostalyia button on each photo, day, month, and album, ready to back up.

Backing up your photos

  • One photo: open any photo and click the Nostalyia button in the toolbar.
  • A day or a month: hover a day on your timeline and click the Nostalyia icon next to it. The day's first item also offers to back up the whole month.
  • A whole album: open an album and use the Nostalyia button to mirror it, photos and album, into your gallery.
  • A selection: tick the photos you want and use the Nostalyia button in the selection bar.
Before each backup the extension tells you how many items it found and how many are already saved, then keeps you posted as it works. Keep the Google Photos tab open while a backup is running.

Your privacy

The extension reads only the photos you ask it to back up, and sends them straight to your own private gallery. It does not track your browsing, show ads, or send your photos or personal data to Nostalyia or anyone else.For the full details, see the extension privacy policy.
